"So live like you mean it, Love 'til you feel it, It's all that we need in our lives, So stand on the edge with me, Hold back your fear and see, Nothing is real 'til it's gone." X
CHASE is one of the few younger people he knows, but she's not particularly young to Takeshi: she's smart and strong and kind, and while she doesn't always speak like Miss Reika would, she's reassuring company. Something about her is wise and much more than he's capable of at his age, and he recognizes this. In fact, he's glad she's one of his friends, with how much she seems to understand (and yet, like him, not get at all). He thinks maybe he won't be quite so lonely if he has people like her to keep him occupied—and maybe he can do the same for her.
Let's be alone together.
Chase's death has caused a terrible ache in Takeshi's heart that hasn't healed yet—and now, thanks to that pain, he's applied himself even more to trying to keep his friends safe. Much to their dislike. He can't just sit back and watch them all die, not like home, not anymore. If he can stop it, he wants to.
He wants you all to live. Being alone hurts too much.
He visits her grave often; he hopes she's okay with him sleeping under the tree. To... keep her company.
"He walks with a purpose, In his sneakers, Down the street—he had, Many questions like children often do, He said, 'Tell me all your thoughts on God?' 'And tell me am I very far?'" X
CASTIEL was very kind to him, even with Takeshi's cut and dry wariness when the other magically appeared in his room. They played games and the angel gave him his word that, should he ever need help, all Takeshi need do is think his name. Takeshi hopes that the same can be asked of him, should the other ever really need it. He's very gentle and very sweet, and in a lot of ways is on Takeshi's level. Of course, there's something much more to the man that the boy, tiny and innocent as he is, can't really see. Something sadder, almost omnipresent, more purposeful. Whatever it is he can't comprehend about the other yet, he's willing to hold the man's hand and walk with him, regardless.
"Another day goes by, and still the children cry, Put a little love in your heart, If you want the world to know, we won't let hatred grow, Put a little love in your heart." X
BETTY was one of the first people aboard the ship who treated him with such kindness; she let him cook with her and never spoke or acted in any other way but careful and gentle. She reminded him a lot of Reika, from the long hair to the soft demeanor. Now that she's vanished, he seeks comfort in thinking maybe the others are right, and people do truly return home. Thinking of her ending up like some of the Gantz team members... it makes him unbearably sad. Will the ship do this to him a lot? Maybe it's really not that different from home.
"I'm talking 'bout the soul all alone Needing the daily bread Someplace to lay his head." X
MATTIE always seems to be there when he needs a little help, something Takeshi's noted. Very formal and intelligent, she's never one to turn down helping where helping is needed. He's never really been around a girl her age, and if he had half a mind to think about it, her presence thus far might be considered 'sisterly'. She's shown him a few things to help him survive, so if he has any questions, he's more than likely to lean toward Mattie. He hopes that she'll be able to teach him to read (and admittedly, part of him is eager to have 'school').
Mattie's gone. She just... vanished.
Takeshi hasn't forgotten. He'll keep doing his best at school... and with cooking, and taking care of himself. He won't forget.
"Will it ever make sense? Somebody's gotta know, There's gotta be more to life than this, There's got to be more to everything I thought exists. We are, we are... the youth of the nation." X
KAZAMA is one of the first people to ever approach him here in space, and for that, Takeshi has garnered a little trust in him. It's possible with the mask fiasco, that trust will be temporarily jolted and turned on its head, but the fact remains: despite Kazama's demeanor, silence, and his more than often stoic expression, he's been there for Takeshi (even if he seems to not really know how to 'help' in many ways). There are pieces to their stories that are eerily similar in some respects—being forced into battle, some 'game' to benefit others, being changed in some ways and numbed to things no one should ever be numbed to. But what really matters is the fact that, should things travel down a dark and winding road at home, he could very easily grow up to be like him.
And despite their hiccups, Takeshi has ultimately come to care genuinely, openly, honestly—when Kazama was shot, he could only think about how he'd lost someone not long beforehand, could only think that Kazama would have easily joined her then and there and he'd never see him again. It scares him. And inevitably, Kazama makes him want to do what so many in his world never succeeds in:
Protect.
No more pain. He doesn't like this. He wants everyone to be alive, healthy, happy.
... So please don't turn him away, Kazama. Don't make it sound like you're not important. Because Takeshi knows what it feels like, to not be important. To be the kid with the bruises or tears that people look the other way for. Takeshi knows how much it hurts, but he also knows how hard it is to reach out for help.
"Large fingers pushing paint, you're god and you've got big hands, the colors blend, the challenges you give man, seek my part, devote myself, my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf." X
NED probably doesn't realize it just yet, but he's the closest thing to Takeshi's father in this place. Perhaps not as open to the boy as Kaze is, perhaps a little less soft around children, but still heart-achingly familiar in the way he acts and moves: quiet, of few words, but observant and powerful. He's strong, Takeshi knows. Sometimes Netherlands is heavier in hand, but he's never, ever been like his mother's boyfriend. He's been caring. He's given him things he's never had before.
Most importantly, he's sat with him and talked. About things. Anything. He could lay with Netherlands and blabber on about all kinds of stuff, if the other wanted to listen. In a place like this, the welcoming arms of so many people have been a blessing; Ned is no exception. Intimidated by him? Sometimes. It's impossible not to be, when Netherlands means business.
But at the same time... he's like family. Not just a friend. Endeared to the little boy's heart, Netherlands is someone the child is more than willing to protect. Just like he'd protected his father.
"But I do it for the kids, life threw the towel in on Every time you fall it's only making your chin strong And I'll be in your corner like Mick, baby, 'til the end Or when you hear a song from that big lady."
DEAN is a good person, Takeshi thinks. And surprisingly, Dean is very influential and makes Takeshi not only want to be a stronger person (and kick more ass), but he also wants to not let people like the hunter down. He won't forget that he'd hurt him—he didn't mean to, but he knows he has to make it up to him someday. If something ever happened and Dean needed to be helped, Takeshi would help. Even if it meant bruises and blood, there's no turning back. It's what his dad would do, definitely.
"May it be an evening star, Shines down upon you, May it be when darkness falls, Your heart will be true, You walk a lonely road, How far you are from home..."
FRODO is gentle and sweet, and Takeshi doesn't have enough people like that in his life back home. In a way, the hobbit reminds him of old man Suzuki—wise, soft-spoken, and certainly hiding some sad ache behind that smile. When Frodo holds him or holds his hand to comfort him, he knows it's genuine—and that Frodo understands... It's just too bad that the shortest people around this ship have had to endure so much of the torment life can throw at them, where they come from.
Takeshi is grateful for what Frodo had done, as well. The mask he'd had. He knows now that it was truly something bad—evil. He shouldn't have had it. It's thanks to him that he never will have it again, either.
"If I could, I'd protect you from the sadness in your eyes Give you courage in a world of compromise, yes, I would If I could, I would teach you all the things I've never learned And I'd help you cross the bridges that I've burned, yes, I would. "
HEATHER is like the mother he prayed his mother would turn into. She's held him when he was troubled and hurting, promised him things that wouldn't come back to hurt him—good, strong promises, ones that can't simply fall apart. She's helped him learn his letters and how to write his name, asked him for things that gave him more than it gave her, and over all, cared about him. He fears being alone, but as long as he can stay close to her, maybe he'll be safer.
Not physically safer, but that's not what Takeshi wants, in the end. He'd fight a hundred aliens off, if it meant keeping her safe.
